Ondo Govt Revives ‘Mare Festival’, Rolls Out Massive Tourism Reform Agenda

The Ondo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Afolabi Adesoji, has announced a major employment initiative approved by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa through the recruitment of Cultural and Tourism Officers into the Ministry.

He added that once the Tourism Bill—currently in its formative stage—receives final legislative approval, it is projected to create over 400 direct jobs and 900 indirect jobs across the state.

Adesoji made the disclosure during a recent engagement on Adaba 88.9 FM, noting that the sector had remained largely dormant for nearly eight years, with limited attention given to the state’s rich cultural heritage and tourism assets.

He explained that upon assuming office about four months ago, the governor directed the ministry to be fully repositioned for sustainable development.

In line with this directive, the Commissioner confirmed that Governor Aiyedatiwa has approved the revival of the iconic Mare Festival, which will return this December for the first time in nine years.

He also revealed that the state government has endorsed strategic partnerships for major cultural events such as the Igogo Festival, Ulefunta Festival, Arogbo Ijaw Festival, Orosun Festival, and the Ilaje Boat Regatta, among others.

According to him, these initiatives will enhance cultural identity, attract tourists, and stimulate local economies across the state.

Adesoji further noted that the governor has demonstrated strong commitment to developing key tourism infrastructure in support of the #VisitOndo vision. These include the proposed refurbishment of the Idanre Hills Resort, the opening of Alara Beach at Araromi Seaside, and the construction of an access road to Ebomi Lake, alongside several other tourism-focused projects captured in the 2026 budget framework.
