“We’re Ready To Deliver”: Edo Works Commissioner Unveils Plan To Tackle Potholes

The Edo State Commissioner for Works, Hon. Felix Akhabue, has assured that the ministry is fully prepared to deliver lasting road solutions as quickly as possible, expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of roads in the state capital and appealed for residents’ cooperation.

Akhabue gave the assurance during a media interview in his office in Benin City, where he announced the state government’s plans to address potholes through the procurement of new equipment and additional personnel for the Rapid Response and Maintenance Department of the Ministry of Works. The initiative, he said, is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving overall road performance.

He explained that government engineers and equipment will be deployed to handle minor road repairs, while major construction projects will be outsourced to contractors.

“We are expecting heavy-duty construction equipment ordered by Governor Monday Okpebholo to enable us to tackle these potholes. The Ministry has a pool of skilled engineers, and with the equipment, we will be able to work efficiently,” he said.

Akhabue further disclosed that the government has approved the procurement of the needed equipment, noting that the ministry lacked essential tools when he assumed office. He assured residents that the ministry will prioritize quality delivery through close supervision by senior engineers and management.

Emphasizing his commitment to active oversight, he added, “The Ministry already has an established Rapid Response and Maintenance Department. We are not lacking manpower. Once the equipment arrives, work will begin. I, the Permanent Secretary, and senior engineers will be on the field with our team as participative managers. We will not just send engineers out and leave them to the job—we will ensure strong supervision to guarantee quality work.”
