Edo Govt, NSCDC Strengthen Alliance To Tackle Illegal Mining
The Edo State Government, through its Ministry of Mining, has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Edo State Command, to enhance security, transparency, and accountability in the State’s mining sector.
Commissioner for Mining, Andrew Ijegbai, gave the assurance while receiving the newly appointed Edo State Commandant of the NSCDC, Commandant Akintayo Saidi Ayinla, during a courtesy visit to the Ministry’s Conference Room.
Ijegbai commended the invaluable role the NSCDC has played in safeguarding mining operations across the State, describing the Corps as a crucial pillar in the Ministry’s fight against illegal mining. He noted that the collaboration has ensured that mining activities align with the vision of Governor Monday Okpebholo for a secure, transparent, and well-regulated extractive industry.
According to him, “The NSCDC has been more than a security partner; it has been the backbone of our enforcement successes. Our work in sanitizing the mining sector stands today because of the discipline and dedication your officers bring to the field. As you assume duty, Commandant Ayinla, we pledge our continued and expanded partnership. Together, we will deepen security, strengthen order, and protect the wealth of our State.”
The Commissioner also paid tribute to the late Commandant Agun Gbenga Joseph, describing him as a disciplined officer whose legacy continues to resonate in the mining communities he helped to stabilize. “Late Commandant Agun set a standard of integrity that remains a guidepost for all of us. We are confident that you will build on that legacy,” he said.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Ese Martina Omoruyi, emphasized that the synergy between the Ministry and the NSCDC has been instrumental in curbing illegal activities that threaten the State’s mineral resources. She urged stakeholders to remain vigilant and resist attempts by individuals seeking to influence enforcement processes for personal gain.
“Your arrival comes at a crucial time for the sector. You will be tested, but we trust that you will stand firm. The Ministry of Mining will remain transparent, cooperative, and fully aligned with your mandate to ensure a seamless partnership anchored on integrity and mutual respect,” she added.
In his response, Commandant Ayinla expressed appreciation for the warm reception and pledged his commitment to upholding the values of the Corps. He assured the Ministry of the NSCDC’s readiness to sustain and enhance the high standards of discipline and operational excellence set by his predecessors. He reaffirmed that the Corps will continue to operate with dignity and professionalism to keep the mining sector safe, lawful, and beneficial to the people of Edo State.
