The Edo State Ministry of Environment and Sustainability has strengthened its collaboration with market leaders and women to improve environmental sanitation and promote cleaner, healthier markets across the state.
Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Nosa Adams, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Edith Ebomoyi, received the delegation and commended market leaders, popularly known as iyekis, for their efforts to maintain clean market environments.
Adams urged residents to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean, stressing that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda prioritises a clean, healthy and sustainable Edo State.
He also pledged the Ministry’s continued collaboration with market stakeholders during subsequent statewide end-of-month sanitation exercises.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Markets, Hon. Juliana Ikharo, commended the Ministry for involving market stakeholders in the July 2026 sanitation exercise, noting that the collaboration helped monitor compliance across markets in Benin metropolis.
Ikharo also conveyed the commitment of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Anani Okpebholo, to ensuring that markets across the state remain clean, orderly and environmentally compliant.
In response, market leaders, popularly known as iyekis, pledged their continued support for government sanitation initiatives and compliance with environmental standards.
The delegation comprised representatives of Ekioba, Oregbeni, Depot, Oliha, St. Saviour, Agbor Park, Urora, Yanga and Ologbo Ekiuwa markets, among others.
