As part of preparations for the July 11, 2026, local government elections, the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) has continued its statewide tour of the 18 local government areas to ensure transparency, efficiency, and public confidence in the forthcoming polls.
The latest phase of the visit took the Commission to Egor, Ovia South-West, and Ovia North-East Local Government Areas in Edo South Senatorial District.
Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of EDSIEC, Hon. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, who was represented by Hon. Dr. Suleman Ikhioriah, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Commission and Local Government Councils to strengthen the electoral process, underscoring the need for adequate logistical and administrative support to facilitate a smooth and credible election cycle.
In response, the local government chairmen present pledged their full cooperation and support for the Commission. Those in attendance included the Chairman of Egor LGA, Hon. Osaro Eribo; Ovia South-West Chairman, Hon. Charles Edobor (represented by Hon. Ben Owe); and Ovia North-East Chairman, Hon. Omoruyi Igbinaken.
Other council leaders who reaffirmed their support included the Chairmen of Ikpoba-Okha, Hon. Eric Osawaru; Orhionmwon, Hon. Thomson Osagie; and Oredo, Hon. Gabriel Iduseri.
Eribo noted that strengthening the state’s electoral system requires collective effort, stating “We understand the vital role EDSIEC plays in ensuring free and fair elections, and we are fully committed to providing every necessary support to make that possible.”
The EDSIEC delegation included Commissioners; Thomas Ighomo, Barr. Hope Osarodion, and Hon. Anthony Aikpoghome, alongside Frank Umoru and other senior staff of the Commission.
The interactive session focused on identifying challenges faced by EDSIEC at the local level and exploring strategies to enhance the preparedness of councils ahead of the elections.
As Edo State gears up for the 2026 local polls, the Commission expressed optimism that continued collaboration with Local Government Councils will be instrumental in addressing logistical, administrative, and community outreach needs critical to ensuring credible and transparent elections.
