In a deliberate effort to enhance rural connectivity and improve access to agricultural markets across the state, the Edo state government has taken steps to finalize the Rural Roads Sector Reform Laws, as part of key requirements for participation in the World Bank-assisted Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP).
This disclosure was made by the Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, represented by the Commissioner for Works, Dr. Felix Akhabue, during a one-day stakeholders’ consultation meeting, organized by the Edo state government in affiliate with the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) and other development partners, which held in Benin City.
The consultation premised on two major components of the reform: the establishment of a State Road Fund (SRF) and the Rural Access Road Agency (RARA), both designed to institutionalize road maintenance and improve access for agricultural activities across the State.
Okpebholo asserted his administration’s dedication to sustainable infrastructure and inclusive rural development, saying “We are committed to implementing meaningful road projects across rural communities in Edo State. This reform is people-driven and anchored on a Government-private sector partnership that promotes participatory budgeting. It aims to close the gap between urban and rural areas”.
While giving his address, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, noted the importance of RAAMP in reducing post-harvest losses and supporting rural livelihoods.
Similarly, the National Coordinator of RAAMP, Aminu Mohammed, represented by Engr. Ehizojie Irabor, noted that the project would provide lasting solutions to infrastructure deficits in rural areas and boost Agricultural Trade across the State.
In his remark, the State Project Coordinator of RAAMP, Engr. Owara Obamwonyi, also asserted that the initiative will improve the welfare of rural communities and create economic linkages across the State through better road networks.
