Ondo Equips 200 Women with Urban Farming Skills For Financial Freedom

The Ondo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, has reaffirmed the commitment of the state government to the total emancipation of women in the state.

Osamaye, who made this known at a one-day training for 200 women on urban agriculture, held at the Women Development and Skill Acquisition Centre organized by the ministry, informed that the training was designed to equip participants with the knowledge of how to utilize available space in their homes for the cultivation of agricultural products, as well as the rearing of goats and rabbits.

She further explained that the training would provide participants with essential knowledge in various aspects of crop production, such as using topsoil, cement/animal feed sacks, and dried organic fertilisers to plant seeds like okra, tomatoes, peppers, vegetables, and maize.

Osamaye noted that the training would cover the use of plastic drums for fish farming, sourcing fingerlings and feed, poultry starter packs (including day-old chicks, cages, feed, and vaccines), and ruminant starter packs (for goats and rabbits).

She emphasised that the training aimed to provide participants with an alternative means of livelihood and an additional financial resource. She encouraged the participants to take the training seriously and apply the knowledge gained at home.

She also revealed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had approved the procurement of equipment and machines for another set of women who were trained six weeks ago in skill acquisitions, including fashion designing, soap making, interior decoration, and computer skills.

The highlight of the program was the presentation of an industrial grinding machine by the commissioner to Miss Augustina Omojere Wemimo, a vulnerable mother of twins from Akoko South West Local Government, who was abandoned by her husband.
