The Ondo State Government has announced a 100% increment in bursary allocations for all indigent students of the state origin studying in recognized institution across Nigeria, including those in public and private institutions.
Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr Laolu Akindolire, who disclosed this in Akure during the consultative meetings with stakeholders on 2026 Budget, describing the decision as the outcome of a deliberate fiscal planning and resource prioritization strategy by the State government .
Akindolire added that the decision was a remarkable demonstration of the commitment of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration to inclusive development and human capital investment in the State.
He said “This bold and strategic decision is coming at a time when many states are grappling with economic strain, it is not just a policy shift; it is a reaffirmation of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering belief in the transformative power of education and the importance of supporting young indigenes as pillars of tomorrow’s economy”.
“Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration has consistently placed the welfare of Ondo State’s citizens at the forefront of its development agenda. The increase in the bursary allocation is yet another clear signal that the government listens, empathizes, and acts.
“At the heart of this decision is a deep understanding of the financial hurdles faced by many students and their families. For some, this bursary is the difference between staying in school or dropping out. Doubling the support, despite budgetary constraints, underscores the government’s prioritization of its youth as critical stakeholders in Ondo State’s future” the commissioner stated.
The commissioner stressed further that inspite of the lean resources, the State government has chosen not to retreat on investments that matter, noting that the bursary increment, which is part of a broader strategic direction to build an empowered, educated and resilient youth population will also benefit thousands of Ondo State indigenes in universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other recognized tertiary institutions.
He called on the private sector, development partners and philanthropic individuals to complement the state government’s efforts in promoting education and youth development.
One of the students, Comrade Ganiyu Yusuf, who lauded the initiative by the State government said “This shows that government is thinking about us. It’s not just about roads and buildings, this bursary is food, books, rent, and peace of mind”
