The Director General of the National Orientation Agency, (NOA) Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu has reiterated the importance of the Nigerian Identity Project, pointing out that the national reorientation policy will evolve a united Nigeria.
He spoke at a town hall audience participation programme hosted by Television Continental (TVC) which discussed the topic “who is a Nigerian?”
Issa-Onilu said nations of the world deliberately nurture values that guide their society, adding that the reorientation policy aims to nurture a guide for the Nigerian society.
The Nigerian Values Charter, according to the Director General, comprises the Nigerian Promise which spells out the core promises of the country to its people and the Citizen Codes which outline the obligations of the citizens to the country.
Countering the assertion that only people in government must drive values, he said citizens in and out of office must have a clear idea of the national values so that in whatever leadership role they find themselves – in the family, the church, mosque, work place, community, etc – they will perform well.
The town hall, moderated by Nifemi Oguntoye, featured other panelists including communication expert, Kadaria Ahmed, legal practitioner, Jiti Ogunye and Dr Keneth Ikenwa of the University of Lagos.
The two-hour long programme had students from the University of Lagos, and others in the audience.
