Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has praised the Olubaka of Oka-Akoko, Oba Yussuf Adebori Adeleye, for his leadership and contributions to community stability, describing traditional rulers as vital pillars of peace and order across the state.
The governor gave the commendation at the Olubaka’s palace during the monarch’s induction into the revered Traditional Elders Council (Ihare).
In his remarks, Aiyedatiwa said the ceremony which also featured the elevation of the Egbe Mabolaje of Ibaka Oka, was historic for the Oka community. He noted that Oba Adeleye’s entry into the Ihare Council was a testament to his wisdom, integrity and exemplary stewardship of the ancient throne.
He explained that the Ihare Council is reserved for individuals of exceptional character and influence, adding that the Olubaka’s peaceful and progressive reign made the honour a fitting recognition of his leadership. The governor also congratulated the Oka indigenes at home and in the diaspora, describing age-grade groups such as Egbe Mabolaje as guardians of unity and traditional discipline.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions, Aiyedatiwa said monarchs remain dependable partners in security, conflict resolution and grassroots development. He noted that their counsel and prayers have been instrumental to the peace and progress enjoyed across the state.
The governor also extended birthday wishes to the monarch, noting that the Ihare festival—a sacred initiation into the circle of elders—coincided with Oba Adeleye’s 82nd birthday. He described the monarch’s life and leadership as an embodiment of dignity, wisdom and unwavering service to his people.
Highlighting the Olubaka’s national and state contributions, Aiyedatiwa recalled his roles as a pioneer member of the National Council of Traditional Rulers, former Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas and founding Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, positions he said had significantly influenced development.
In his response, Oba Adeleye said joining the Ihare Council symbolised a transition rooted in age, resilience and accumulated wisdom. He explained that the honour is strictly age-based, noting that the ceremonial walking sticks presented to elders represent endurance and survival rather than frailty. He added that age-grade institutions have long served as moral guides, law enforcers and peacemakers in Yoruba communities.
Oba Adeleye said these structures have continued to flourish under his reign, supporting unity, education, health and community peace in Oka. Speaking on behalf of the newly conferred chiefs, Senator Jackson Bent, the Yeye Aare Arimuyangan of Oka Land, thanked the monarch for the honour and urged residents to support Governor Aiyedatiwa’s development agenda.
