Alia Assures Continuous Support for Families of Fallen Security Personnel in Benue
Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, on Friday, September 5, 2025, met with families of security operatives who lost their lives in active service, pledging sustained government support for their welfare and future.
A statement posted on the facebook page of the state government, said the event was held at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi, and brought together widows, children, security chiefs and members of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA).
Leading a minute of silence in honour of the fallen officers, Governor Alia described them as gallant men who paid the ultimate price to defend the peace and unity of Benue State and Nigeria.
The governor announced an immediate cash support of ₦5 million for each family of the 74 fallen heroes recorded between 2024 and 2025, and directed the commissioners of education and humanitarian affairs to work with POWA and security agencies to design long-term welfare programmes for the families.
Earlier, the Director-General of Benue Homeland Security, Commodore Jacob Gbwamwuan (Rtd.), described the gesture as unprecedented in the history of Benue State and commended the governor’s compassion toward bereaved families.
Speaking on behalf of security agencies, Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, lauded the initiative as a morale booster and assured the governor of renewed commitment to securing the state.
In her remarks, Mrs. Ujunwa Emenari, wife of the Commissioner of Police and Chairperson of POWA, thanked Governor Alia for his support, noting the harsh realities many widows and children face after losing their breadwinners.
Governor Alia further directed service chiefs to submit a list of security personnel currently injured in the course of duty, assuring that the state government would cover their medical expenses.
