The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, has commended the invaluable contributions of social workers to peace, harmony and social stability in the state, stressing that their role in society cannot be overemphasised.
Ogunlende made this remark while delivering an address at the 2025 Social Work Day celebration held in Alausa-Ikeja. The event was themed “Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing.”
According to the commissioner, a peaceful and cohesive society depends largely on the proactive intervention of trained social workers who help to resolve conflicts before they escalate. “For us to have a society where peace and harmony thrive, and where conflicts are nipped in the bud, the place and importance of social work cannot be overstressed. Society cannot do without social workers because of their tremendous contribution to social wellbeing,” he said.
Represented at the event by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Abiodun Dina, Ogunlende noted that social challenges are inevitable in any society and must be professionally managed to safeguard peace and stability. He cited studies showing that children from stable homes perform better than those from broken homes, stressing the need for trained social workers to help families navigate challenges and maintain stability.
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Pharm. (Mrs.) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, described social workers as professionals whose contributions to the social fabric of society are immeasurable. She noted that their critical role informed the inclusion of Social Inclusion in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda during his second term.
Represented by the Director of Social Welfare, Dr. Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu said the deliberate inclusion of social inclusion policy underscores the governor’s commitment to ensuring stable homes and a peaceful, progressive state. She explained that the policy ensures no segment of society—children, adults, the elderly or persons with disabilities—is left behind in the delivery of social services.
“As the lead ministry for the implementation of this policy, we are committed to ensuring that every Lagosian benefits from good governance. This celebration is also to recognise and honour those who work tirelessly to make the policy impactful,” she added.
In her remarks, the Chairman of the National Association of Social Workers (NASOW), Lagos State Chapter, Mrs. Saheed Adebambo, said Social Work Day serves as an opportunity to celebrate the profession, raise awareness, advocate for positive change and promote social justice. She stressed that social workers deserve recognition for their crucial role in building a resilient and inclusive society.
