The Olowo of Owo and Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, has declared that those unwilling to uphold ancient traditions have no business occupying royal stools.
Oba Ogunoye made this known in Akure at a colloquium held in honour of the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, who marked his tenth coronation anniversary.
His remarks came in response to concerns raised by a keynote discussant, Dr. Festus Adedayo, who argued that Nigeria’s traditional institution has lost its mystique and potency due to modernization and the failure of some kings to embody age-old customs.
Adedayo asserted that the diminishing sacredness of monarchs has hindered the institution’s impact on nation-building.
Meanwhile, the Olowo insisted that no one is forced to become an Oba, and that the role requires deep respect and adherence to customs, no matter how ancient.
Oba Ogunoye praised the Oyo State government for respecting tradition in the recent installation of the new Alaafin of Oyo, saying such examples must be upheld rather than dismissed.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who delivered the keynote address titled “Role of Nigeria’s Traditional Institution in Nation Building: Impediments and Prospects”, also highlighted the enduring relevance of the monarchy.
Represented by the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Makinde said the institution predates Nigeria’s oil economy and remains a vital element of governance and community cohesion.
