A woman who recently returned from the United Kingdom has died in a road accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while en route to Abeokuta, Ogun State, for a wedding.
The crash occurred Monday evening near the Christopher University axis, involving a Toyota Camry and a truck.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed the incident, stating it happened around 5:48 p.m.
“The crash involved a white Toyota Camry carrying three occupants and a truck moving in the same direction. Preliminary findings indicate that the car rammed into the truck, with excessive speed suspected as a contributing factor”, said Akinbiyi.
“The victims included one male and two female passengers, all sustaining varying degrees of injuries. Regrettably, one female passenger died from injuries sustained in the crash, while the other two occupants were rescued with injuries,” Akinbiyi added.
He noted that the deceased and one of the injured passengers had recently returned from the UK and were travelling to Abeokuta for a wedding ceremony when the tragedy occurred.
“The injured were promptly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. They were evacuated to Famobis Hospital and Redeemed Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” the TRACE spokesperson said.
Expressing sympathy, Akinbiyi condoled with the family and reiterated TRACE’s warning against reckless driving, saying “We urge motorists to avoid excessive speed and maintain safe driving practices at all times. Speeding remains one of the major causes of road traffic crashes on our highways”.
