The Federal Government has introduced a series of strategic measures to enhance food production and ensure food security nationwide.
These initiatives were unveiled during the 46th meeting of the National Council on Agriculture and Food Security, held in Calabar, Cross River State. The measures demonstrate the government’s commitment to addressing challenges in the agricultural sector.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, outlined the government’s key priorities, including the provision of agro-inputs to farmers, the restructuring of agricultural institutions, and fostering collaboration among farmers, herders, and local communities.
“Our priority actions include delivering agricultural inputs to farmers, repositioning institutions, and deepening community engagement to improve food production,” Kyari stated.
He also highlighted other initiatives, such as partnerships for water resource irrigation projects, soil fertility improvement programs, and the establishment of advanced laboratories within research institutes.The minister emphasized the importance of inclusivity, transparency, and collaboration in promoting sustainable agribusiness across the country.
Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, represented by Deputy Governor Peter Odey, pledged support for smallholder farmers through the provision of agricultural inputs and financial grants. He reiterated the state’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s agricultural policies aimed at achieving food and nutritional security.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, also addressed the gathering, stressing the role of infrastructure, technology, and entrepreneurship in unlocking Nigeria’s agricultural potential and fostering social inclusion.
The annual council meeting brought together key stakeholders, including State Commissioners of Agriculture, Permanent Secretaries, development partners, and representatives of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria.
The event concluded with awards honoring farmers and other stakeholders for their exceptional contributions to advancing the agricultural sector.
