…urges alumni support
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing tertiary education in the state, emphasizing the importance of innovative and practical learning to prepare students for global competition.
Speaking on Thursday at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Faculty of Engineering’s 60th Anniversary celebration and Sixth Alumni Public Lecture, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the state’s educational strides, noting that two universities—the Lagos State University of Technology and the University of Education—were established during his first term.
He also revealed plans to establish the Lagos State University of Medical Sciences next year to address medical tourism and increase the number of state-owned universities to four.
Sanwo-Olu, who chaired the event themed “The Nigerian Power Industry: Past, Present, and Future,” emphasized the need for continuous support for tertiary institutions, particularly the Faculty of Engineering. He urged alumni, public, and private organizations to invest in the growth of the faculty, encouraging hands-on practical training to better equip students for the demands of the field.
“The Faculty of Engineering has become a beacon of theoretical excellence, and it is crucial that we support it to ensure the production of future engineers who can thrive globally,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The event also marked the relaunch of the development fund for the Faculty of Engineering, aimed at fostering infrastructural growth and academic excellence.
Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, echoed Sanwo-Olu’s call for alumni involvement, urging them to contribute towards the regeneration of the faculty to benefit future generations of engineers.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, also stressed the importance of alumni support, stating that their collaboration with the university is essential for national development, particularly through the training of future engineers.
Chairman of the UNILAG Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association, Engr. Dideolu Falobi, represented by Engr. Yetunde Holloway, called on alumni to leverage their influence and resources to elevate the faculty to new heights, aspiring to make it the “Harvard of Nigeria.”
Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Samson Adeosun, closed the event by urging alumni to continue supporting the faculty’s mission of advancing engineering education and embracing emerging technologies for sustainable solutions and global partnerships.
