Nigeria Labour Congress President, Joe Ajaero, has reaffirmed his commitment to the fight for improved welfare for Nigerian workers, stating that the struggle will persist despite being summoned by the police.
Ajaero declared his readiness to sacrifice his life for the labour movement if necessary, emphasizing that the movement remains the most patriotic and largest pan-Nigerian organization in the country.
Addressing NLC members and affiliate unions at the Labour House in Abuja on Thursday, following his interrogation by the police on alleged terrorism charges, Ajaero noted that he is accustomed to the intimidation tactics used against labour unions by authorities.
He said, “The labour movement is worth dying for because of its patriotism and commitment. It is one of the largest pan-Nigerian organizations. Our patriotism, dating back to the colonial era and extending through the military period, is unwavering.
“We are more patriotic than any other organization in this country, and we will continue to uphold that. I’ve been to the police and returned, and I want to assure you that this is part of the hazards of our job. It’s something to be expected.
“For those of you who called me, I told them this is the nature of the job. Even at the unit level, some of us face these challenges.”
Ajaero expressed disappointment that both the federal and state governments have yet to implement the ₦70,000 minimum wage. He announced that the next focus of organized labour would be to compel the government to begin the implementation of the minimum wage for workers.
“Regardless of the situation, we are committed to continuing the struggle. We have secured the minimum wage, but it has not been implemented. Therefore, we must push for its immediate enforcement.
“Anything that contributes to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers will have our full involvement. We will not be distracted. On behalf of the NLC, I want to thank every one of you for your unwavering solidarity,” Ajaero told the crowd of supporters.
