The Ondo State Government is set to receive a national performance award in recognition of its exceptional achievement in flood management, after recording no flooding incidents across the state this year.
The Technical Assistant to the Governor on Erosion Control and Related Matters, Mr. Elisha Ebijimi, disclosed this while assessing ongoing dredging and channelisation projects in various parts of the state.
Ebijimi revealed that the award would be presented to the state in Abuja on November 30, describing it as a milestone in environmental management and a testament to the government’s proactive measures.
He noted that the feat, the first of its kind in Ondo State’s history, was achieved through consistent investment and strategic interventions in erosion and flood control projects.
“For the past two weeks, our team has been working intensively across different local government areas. We have been tackling flood challenges since last year, and this year the effort has continued. It is the first time in the history of Ondo State that we have not recorded any flooding,” Ebijimi said.
He listed the local government areas where dredging and channelisation projects have been executed to include Akure South, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo, Akoko South-West, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, and Idanre, with ongoing works in Odigbo and Ilaje.
Ebijimi added that residents of the affected communities have expressed satisfaction with the visible environmental improvements.
However, he cautioned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains, warning that such practices could reverse the state’s progress.
“I want to appeal to the good people of Ondo State to stop illegal dumping of refuse. It is harmful and counterproductive,” he stated.
