OYSIEC Announces Date, Timetable for 2027 Oyo LG Polls

 

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has announced January 16, 2027, as the date for the next local government elections in the state.

The decision was taken at the Commission’s inaugural meeting held at its headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan, and presided over by the Chairman, Dr Babatunde Afees Adeniyi.

The Commission assured residents of a transparent, credible and peaceful electoral process.

According to a statement issued after the meeting, elections will be conducted across all polling units in the 33 local government councils in Oyo State between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the scheduled date.

The statement added that electioneering campaigns will end at midnight on Friday, January 15, 2027, while any supplementary or re-run election will take place on Saturday, January 23, 2027, if necessary.

OYSIEC explained that the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors will expire on May 23, 2027, in line with the Local Government Law of Oyo State (as amended).

It noted that the Commission is empowered by relevant provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and the OYSIEC Law to issue notice of elections within the stipulated timeframe.

The Commission also called on political parties, stakeholders and residents to support and cooperate with it to ensure free, fair and credible local government elections in the state.
