Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the termination of appointments of 425 employees of the Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC), citing an aim at restructuring and improving efficiency of the workforce.
This decision was disclosed by Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement released over the weekend.
The statement highlighted the ongoing efforts of the LWC to reorganize its operations and address the challenges of water scarcity in the state, despite existing infrastructure projects.
It also noted financial and operational struggles, including difficulties in generating sufficient revenue to fulfill obligations, leading to a decline in customers and revenue as reasons which led to the tough decision.
According to the statement, the corporation initiated a personnel audit in October 2023, overseen by the Office of the Head of Service since August 2023, which recommended phased actions to streamline the workforce.
The first phase involved the termination of 425 temporary staff with outdated contracts, with subsequent phases focusing on permanent staff whose roles are no longer needed.
It also asserted that affected employees will receive three months’ salary as notice and redundancy payments, along with statutory benefits like pensions.
LSWC also introduced a new organizational structure aimed at enhancing operations and financial sustainability, emphasizing its commitment to providing sustainable and dependable water supply to the residents of Lagos State.
