The Chairman of the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Rt. Hon. Victor Olabimtan, has led members of the board’s management team on a monitoring exercise of public primary and junior secondary schools to assess compliance with school resumption guidelines at the start of the academic term.
The exercise was aimed at evaluating teachers’ punctuality and attendance, students’ turnout, and the overall preparedness of schools for effective teaching and learning.
Speaking during the exercise, Olabimtan said the visits form part of SUBEB’s quality assurance framework designed to ensure that schools are fully prepared for academic activities from the first day of resumption.
He stressed that early and orderly resumption is critical to achieving curriculum targets, noting that the loss of instructional time negatively affects learning outcomes, particularly at the foundational level of basic education.
During the visits, the SUBEB chairman and his team inspected classroom activities, teaching processes, school facilities and administrative records, and also interacted with headteachers and teachers to identify challenges affecting smooth academic operations.
Olabimtan commended schools that demonstrated high levels of compliance, punctuality and preparedness, describing such commitment as a reflection of professionalism and dedication to duty among education stakeholders.
He, however, warned against absenteeism and laxity, noting that appropriate sanctions would be applied in line with existing regulations where any form of negligence is observed.
The chairman reiterated that school monitoring is a continuous exercise aimed at promoting accountability, discipline and improved service delivery in the basic education sector.
He assured school administrators that observations and challenges identified during the visits would be documented and addressed promptly to improve the teaching and learning environment.
Olabimtan also charged teachers to place greater emphasis on teaching pupils how to read correctly, describing effective reading skills as the foundation of basic education and a vital tool for academic success. He further directed all Area Education Officers that, under no circumstances, should Jolly Phonics teachers be transferred from their schools.
He reaffirmed SUBEB’s commitment to implementing education policies in line with government directives and Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) guidelines to deliver quality, accessible and inclusive basic education across Ondo State.
