Telecommunications analysts say that the drastic decline of cyber cafe users and subscription cannot be unconnected with the arrival of mobile technology.
The December 2020 NCC statistical report showed that there is a 14.5% increase compared to 2019 in the total number of Internet users through Internet Service Providers (ISPs) across the six geopolitical zones.
South-West had the highest number of Internet users in December 2020 with 223,036 users indicating 76% of the total subscriptions while the North-Central had 18% with 52,505 users and the South-East had 0.05%, which was the least of all the regions with 166 users.
The South-South had 6% with 16,652 users, North-West had 0.3% with 866 users and the North-East had 0.22% with 667 users.
The report revealed that the larger percentage of the service provisions are in Lagos and Abuja because the population in those locations are high and the demand for broadband services is also high.
Telecommunications analysts opined that more tech investors should be encouraged to get involved in the internet business so as to enhance the deep spread and availability of the service across the country.
They are of the view that the business environment must be made more conducive than before through consistent public policies and giving out licenses at an affordable rates to tech investors.
