Two individuals lost their lives on Wednesday in a fatal collision at Ilubirin, Simpson, on Lagos Island, in an accident authorities have attributed to excessive speed.
The incident was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). In a statement, spokesman Adebayo Taofiq described the crash as a “tragic reminder” of the dangers posed by reckless driving on the state’s roads.
Preliminary investigations reveal that a Toyota Camry, with registration number MUS 885 JA, was travelling at high speed when the driver lost control. The vehicle veered off its lane, striking the two victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
LASTMA personnel promptly secured the area to maintain order and prevent secondary incidents. The driver, who allegedly attempted to flee the scene, was apprehended by officials and subsequently handed over to officers at the Adeniji Adele Police Division for further investigation and prosecution.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, visited the crash site. He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and issued a stern warning to motorists.
“Speed violations remain a primary cause of preventable fatalities on our roads,” Bakare-Oki stated. He strongly urged all drivers to adhere to approved speed limits and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to intensifying road safety education and enforcement across Lagos.
