First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, has described the Northern Derby as a formidable platform for preserving the region’s rich cultural heritage and traditions while creating economic opportunities for young people.
Represented by the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, at the 44th edition of the Northern Derby in Zaria on Saturday, the First Lady said the annual horse racing event has continued to serve as a symbol of unity, history and cultural identity across Northern Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.
“Today’s event marks a celebration of sporting excellence and also a tribute to a rich heritage that has been passed down through generations. The Northern Derby stands as a proud symbol of our history, culture and identity,” she said.
Senator Tinubu also paid tribute to the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of the former Northern Region, for establishing the Northern States Turf Club Authority, describing his vision as instrumental in preserving the region’s cultural heritage and fostering unity.
The First Lady urged organisers to continue using the event as a platform to engage young people through sports, cultural activities, entrepreneurship and community development.
“I commend the organisers for ensuring that this event remains a platform for preserving tradition while creating opportunities for young people to participate in sports, cultural activities, entrepreneurship and community development,” she said.
Earlier, Hajiya Nana Shettima, on behalf of the First Lady, paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Zazzau and President of the Northern States Turf Club Authority, His Royal Majesty Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali, where she reiterated Senator Tinubu’s support for the continued growth of the Northern Derby.
In his remarks, the Emir appealed to the First Lady to champion the inclusion of horse racing as a national sport, arguing that such recognition would help curb youth restiveness and further promote Nigeria’s cultural heritage. He also called for greater support in preserving traditional values, particularly among women and young people.
