Lagos APC Defends Tinubu’s Electoral Act Assent, Insists Reform Followed Due Process
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assent to the Electoral Act 2026, dismissing opposition criticisms as “orchestrated hysteria” and politically motivated.
In a statement on Thursday, Lagos APC Spokesman, Seye Oladejo, expressed “undisguised disappointment” over what he described as exaggerated reactions to the President’s decision.
Oladejo said governance should not be reduced to a popularity contest or “a theatre for digital propaganda,” stressing that the assent followed due constitutional process, legislative debate and institutional consultation.
He criticised what he termed a “romanticised and misleading narrative” about real-time transmission of election results, noting that similar systems in other democracies had faced technological glitches, legal ambiguities, cybersecurity risks and judicial reversals.
According to him, such experiences highlight the danger of placing political convenience above systemic integrity, while accusing critics of presenting half-truths and ignoring constitutional and logistical realities.
The Lagos APC further argued that the opposition’s stance was driven by opportunism rather than patriotism, insisting that demands for absolute technological guarantees overlook Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges.
Oladejo described the President’s action as prudent and legally grounded, emphasising that electoral reforms must be sustainable and defensible, not reactionary or swayed by social media pressure.
Reaffirming its support for reforms anchored on legality and national cohesion, the party cautioned against distorting public sentiment, stating that governance requires “maturity over melodrama, substance over spectacle, and nation over narrative.”
