As part of efforts by the Edo State Government to promote healthier, more sustainable lifestyles for women and advance environmental sustainability, the Office of the First Lady has partnered with key stakeholders to distribute 250 clean coal stoves, pots and cash support for the purchase of charcoal to women in the Edo South Senatorial District.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony in Benin City, the Coordinator of the Edo State First Lady’s Office, Mrs. Edesili Anani, said the initiative was designed to improve the wellbeing of women by reducing health risks associated with traditional cooking methods while supporting environmental protection.
According to her, the provision of clean coal stoves reflects a deliberate step toward reducing carbon emissions, mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable development across the state. She added that the initiative aligns with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s vision of building a resilient, environmentally conscious and self-sustaining Edo.
Mrs. Anani expressed appreciation to partners, including the BeLiEF & Care Foundation, her personal charity initiative, and the Ministry of Science and Technology, for their support. She also commended women in the state and urged beneficiaries to use the clean stoves responsibly for a healthier environment and a better future.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Hon. Etin-Osa Ogbeiwi, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Jonathan Ukpebor, said the donation of 250 clean coal stoves was aimed at supporting low-income households and vulnerable groups, describing the initiative as a welcome development.
He noted the rising demand for clean and affordable cooking alternatives across Nigeria due to the increasing cost of cooking gas. He added that clean stoves reduce air pollution, lower cooking expenses, and create job opportunities in sales and distribution.
The commissioner called on partners, donors and relevant institutions to collaborate with the state in building a society where technology and innovation empower all families.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Hon. Gabriel Iduseri, represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Ebegue Evans Igho-Osagie, thanked Mrs. Anani for selecting Oredo as the location for the empowerment programme. He acknowledged her organisation’s previous initiatives and praised her commitment to improving the lives of women in local communities.
