The Ondo State Ministry of Environment has issued a seven-day ultimatum to traders operating along streets and unauthorized areas within the Alagbaka axis of Akure, to vacate their trading spots immediately or face sanctions.
The warning was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko.
According to the statement, the ministry expressed deep concern over the increasing rate of street trading and the establishment of illegal markets in the Alagbaka area, describing the trend as unacceptable.
Dr. Loko noted that the activities of street traders pose serious environmental, safety, and traffic challenges, adding that the government would no longer tolerate the continuation of such unlawful practices.
He further identified indiscriminate littering by traders as another major concern, saying the act was “unbefitting of an environment where government operates and delivers good governance to the people.”
The ministry warned that anyone found violating the directive after the expiration of the ultimatum would be regarded as an environmental law offender and face appropriate sanctions in line with existing laws.
