Didih Wins Gold, Shatters Games Record For Nigeria

Team Nigeria’s impressive weightlifting campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Tuesday as Onome Omolola Didih clinched gold in the women’s 53kg event, breaking the Commonwealth Games record to secure another title for Nigeria.

Didih delivered a dominant performance from start to finish, opening with a sensational 93kg lift in the snatch to set a new Commonwealth Games record. She then completed the clean and jerk with authority, finishing with a combined total of 206kg to establish another Games record.

The Nigerian weightlifter remained in control throughout the competition, producing a composed display to stay ahead of her rivals and reinforce Team Nigeria’s dominance in the sport.

India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav claimed the silver medal with a total lift of 199kg, also surpassing the previous Games record, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx took bronze with 178kg.

Didih’s victory extends Nigeria’s outstanding run in weightlifting, which has become one of the country’s most successful events at the Glasgow Games.

Her gold medal follows Ruth Asuquo Nyong’s silver in the women’s 48kg event and Edidiong Joseph Umoafia’s triumph in the men’s 71kg category. Favour Agboro also delivered a strong performance, narrowly missing the podium after finishing fourth in the men’s 65kg event.

The latest success further boosts Team Nigeria’s medal haul in Glasgow, where the country has also dominated the para powerlifting competition with a string of gold and silver medals.
