Tinubu Congratulates Ghana’s President-Elect, John Mahama, Praises Democratic Process
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, on his victory in the December 7 general election, commending the peaceful conduct of the electoral process.
In a phone call to Mahama, President Tinubu expressed hope that his return to power would foster greater stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), where Tinubu serves as chairman.
Tinubu highlighted the importance of Mahama’s leadership in strengthening regional cooperation and addressing shared challenges in West Africa.
A statement by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga revealed that Tinubu also praised Ghanaians for their commitment to democracy, as demonstrated by the orderly and transparent conduct of the presidential and parliamentary elections.
He described Ghana’s political maturity as a beacon for the African continent.
The Nigerian leader applauded Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), for graciously conceding defeat even before the official announcement of results by Ghana’s Electoral Commission.
Tinubu noted that Bawumia’s actions underscored Ghana’s strong democratic ethos and commitment to peace.
Reflecting on Mahama’s return to Jubilee House, Tinubu acknowledged the Ghanaian people’s trust in his leadership, noting his track record as President from 2012 to 2017 and his extensive public service, including roles as Vice President, Member of Parliament, and minister.
Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to collaborate with Mahama’s incoming administration to deepen bilateral ties across various sectors and build a more prosperous West Africa.
He emphasized that democracy remains the cornerstone of political stability and development in the region, adding that the freedom of the people to choose their leaders is a source of pride for the continent.
