Ebola: Lagos Steps Up Surveillance, Urges Calm

The Lagos State Government has intensified disease surveillance and emergency preparedness following the confirmation of an imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in Abuja, assuring residents that no suspected cases have been identified in the state.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, the government said it was strengthening disease monitoring, public awareness and coordination with relevant agencies to ensure early detection and a swift response to any potential case.
As part of the measures, the state conducted a preparedness assessment at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, engaging airport management, Port Health Services and other aviation and public health stakeholders on passenger screening, information sharing and emergency response protocols.
The government urged residents to remain vigilant without panicking, explaining that Ebola spreads primarily through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of infected symptomatic persons, contaminated materials or infected animals.
Symptoms include fever, severe weakness, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
Residents who experience symptoms following possible exposure are advised to seek prompt medical assessment and contact health authorities before visiting a healthcare facility.Travellers were also urged to cooperate with Port Health Services and comply with official health guidance.
The government advised residents to report suspected exposure or seek assistance through the emergency numbers 112 or 767, or contact the Directorate of Epidemiology, Biosecurity and Global Health on 0802 316 9485.
It said surveillance and preparedness efforts would continue as the situation evolves, urging residents to observe preventive measures and rely on verified information from official sources.
