2027: Yari Seeks Support For Tinubu As Oba of Benin Backs Governance Continuity

The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku’Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has called for continuity in governance, warning against seeking political change simply for the sake of change.

The monarch spoke on Tuesday at the Benin Palace when the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, Abdulaziz Yari, led a delegation to the palace to seek royal blessings, prayers and support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

Oba Ewuare II stressed that the Benin throne remained non-partisan, saying his call for continuity should not be interpreted as support for any political party.

“There is no point in change for the sake of change. That is not to say that I belong to one party or the other,” he said.

The monarch also urged political leaders across party lines to cooperate in the national interest, arguing that constructive engagement between the ruling party and the opposition would strengthen democracy.

Yari said the delegation visited the palace specifically to seek the monarch’s support for Tinubu’s re-election, citing improvements in economic indicators, GDP growth, inflation and foreign exchange stability, as evidence of progress under the administration.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, appealed for support for Tinubu’s re-election, arguing that the President deserved a second term and that political equity favoured the South.

Idahosa said the Edo State Government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo, had implemented projects that would be used to campaign for the President. He expressed confidence that the state would vote massively for Tinubu in the 2027 election.
