Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia delivered a superb performance to win the men’s 71kg weightlifting gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding another title to Team Nigeria’s impressive campaign.

Umoafia dominated the competition, lifting 147kg in the snatch before producing 172kg in the clean and jerk to finish with a winning total of 319kg.

The Nigerian laid the foundation for victory by topping the snatch standings and maintained his composure in the clean and jerk to secure the gold medal with a commanding overall performance.

Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi also lifted 172kg in the clean and jerk but finished with a total of 314kg to claim the silver medal, while Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses took bronze with a combined lift of 310kg.

Umoafia’s triumph increased Team Nigeria’s gold medal tally to four and raised the country’s overall medal count to eight, further highlighting the nation’s dominance in weightlifting at the Glasgow Games following its earlier success in para powerlifting.
