Brazilian star Neymar Jr. has announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s shock 2-1 defeat to Norway in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on Sunday.
The former Brazil captain made the emotional announcement after the five-time world champions crashed out of the tournament, bringing an end to a distinguished international career that spanned more than 16 years.
Speculation had emerged before the World Cup that the 34-year-old could call time on his international career after the tournament, regardless of Brazil’s outcome. Sunday’s defeat to Norway ultimately marked his final appearance for the Selecao.
Neymar’s international journey came full circle at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where he made his Brazil debut in a friendly against the United States in 2010.
He ended his career at the same venue, scoring a stoppage-time penalty in Brazil’s 2-1 loss to Norway, but his goal was not enough to prevent the South Americans from suffering a stunning elimination.
Speaking after the match, an emotional Neymar reflected on his time with the national team and confirmed that his international career had come to an end.
“I tried. I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium and I finished here. It is now over,” Neymar said, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Neymar leaves the Brazil national team as one of the country’s greatest-ever players, ending a glittering international career that featured multiple major tournaments and a lasting legacy with the Selecao.
