Goncalo Ramos scored a stoppage-time winner as Portugal came from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 in a thrilling FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final in Toronto, setting up a last-four clash with Spain.
Croatia led after the restart through Ivan Perisic, but Cristiano Ronaldo equalised from the penalty spot with his third goal of the tournament before Ramos headed home Rafael Leao’s cross in the fourth minute of added time.
Portugal had nearly scored early on when Leao set up Bruno Fernandes, but Dominik Livakovic saved and Josip Sutalo blocked the rebound. Croatia then struck first in the second half, with Perisic finishing at the far post after a move down the right. They thought they had doubled their lead soon after, but Igor Matanovic’s goal was ruled out for offside.
Portugal responded strongly, with Leao hitting the crossbar and Ronaldo having a goal disallowed before the equaliser arrived after Vlasic fouled Renato Veiga in the box. Following a VAR review, Ronaldo converted the penalty to make it 1-1.
Croatia remained dangerous, with Diogo Costa making several key saves and more goals ruled out for offside. But Portugal completed the comeback in the 94th minute when Leao crossed for Ramos to head home.
Croatia briefly thought they had equalised late on, but another VAR review ruled out the goal. Portugal now face Spain in Dallas on Monday, July 6, for a place in the final.
