Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has unveiled plans to turn Ogun Waterside Local Government into a major industrial and maritime hub, announcing the revival of the long-abandoned Olokola Liquefied Natural Gas (OKLNG) project and reaffirming his administration’s commitment to developing the coastal axis.
He made the announcement on Friday while commissioning the reconstructed Gao-Ibiade Road, saying the project was designed to prepare the area for expected growth in industrial, commercial and maritime activities.
Abiodun said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) had informed the state of its decision to revive the multi-billion-dollar OKLNG project, one of Nigeria’s biggest gas initiatives.
He also restated the state’s commitment to the proposed Ogun Deep Sea Port, saying steps were being taken to actualise the project. He added that the discovery of premium-grade crude oil in the area had boosted Ogun Waterside’s investment prospects, with plans for a refinery, deep seaport, naval base and dockyard.
According to him, the reconstruction of the Gao-Ibiade Road was part of the infrastructure needed to support the expected economic expansion and open up coastal communities.
“We are preparing for the imminent explosion of economic activities in this local government area. Ogun Waterside is a jewel that must be fully tapped,” he said.
Abiodun said his administration remained committed to spreading development across all 20 local government areas, and announced that work on the J4-Gao Road would soon extend to Abigi, the council headquarters.
Earlier, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, said the road was reconstructed to boost economic activity and improve connectivity. He assured residents of durable standards.
Also speaking, Hon. Joseph Adegbesan, representing Ijebu North, Ijebu East and Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency, praised the governor and urged the reconstruction of the J4 Junction-Iwopin Road and the second phase of the Gao-Ibiade Road.
Similarly, Hon. Shamsideen Adekunle Lawal, representing Ogun Waterside State Constituency, commended the governor for extending infrastructure to the area, noting that work has begun on the Deep Sea Port and Naval Base projects, while oil exploration is already underway.
