Scotland’s hopes of securing a historic place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage suffered a setback after a 1-0 defeat to Morocco, who struck just 70 seconds into the contest.
Head coach Steve Clarke had hoped his side could secure at least a point, a result that would have put them on the brink of qualification from Group C. Instead, the Scots endured the worst possible start against the highly rated African champions.
Morocco, ranked sixth in the world and reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions, capitalised on Scotland’s defensive lapse almost immediately. Ismael Saibari raced through on goal and unleashed a powerful finish to put his side ahead inside the opening two minutes.
Clarke made several changes to the team that defeated Haiti on Saturday, including deploying Kieran Tierney on the left side of midfield in a bid to contain Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi.
However, Scotland’s tactical plan was quickly undone as centre-backs Grant Hanley and Jack Hendry were caught out by Saibari’s movement. The Moroccan midfielder burst into space and clinically converted to give his side an early advantage.
The goal stunned the travelling Tartan Army, who had arrived at Boston Stadium full of optimism following Scotland’s victory over Haiti. Instead, they were left anxiously watching their side chase the game from the opening moments.
Despite the disappointment, Scotland’s qualification hopes remain alive. With one group match remaining, Clarke’s men still have their fate in their own hands and can secure progression to the knockout rounds with a positive result in their final fixture.
Morocco’s composed display underlined their status as one of the tournament favourites, while Scotland must now regroup quickly as they prepare for a decisive final group-stage encounter.
