Manchester United winger Amad Diallo emerged as Ivory Coast’s hero, scoring a dramatic 90th-minute winner to secure a hard-fought victory over Ecuador in their FIFA World Cup Group E opener in Philadelphia.
The decisive moment came in the closing stages when Amad, introduced from the bench, calmly guided the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot after a powerful run and delivery from Wilfried Singo. The goal ended Ecuador’s impressive 19-match unbeaten streak, which had stretched for nearly two years.
Amad’s impact was particularly notable given his surprise omission from Ivory Coast’s starting lineup. The substitute justified his introduction with a match-winning contribution that significantly boosted the Elephants’ hopes of advancing from a group that also features Germany and Curacao.
The victory places Ivory Coast in a strong position to challenge for a place in the knockout stages, a feat they have never achieved at the World Cup. Their return to the tournament after a 12-year absence could hardly have begun in more dramatic fashion.
Ecuador, however, will feel unfortunate not to have taken something from the contest after striking the woodwork three times. John Yeboah and Alan Minda both rattled the crossbar in the first half as the South Americans searched for an opening goal.
Veteran captain Enner Valencia also came close after the break, hitting the post from a tight angle. Despite creating several dangerous opportunities, Ecuador struggled to test Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana consistently.
The match remained evenly balanced throughout, with Ecuador failing to register a shot on target until the 68th minute when Gonzalo Plata finally forced Fofana into action. Ivory Coast also threatened, with Nice forward Elye Wahi striking the crossbar early in the second half.
Ecuador appeared on course to preserve another clean sheet under manager Sebastian Beccacece, whose side had recorded 12 shutouts in their previous 19 matches. They successfully contained much of Ivory Coast’s attacking threat, including highly rated Yan Diomande, but were ultimately undone by Amad’s late moment of brilliance.
