Qatar earned their first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup finals in dramatic fashion, scoring a stoppage-time equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their Group B clash.
Boualem Khoukhi emerged as the hero for the Gulf nation, heading home Homam El Amin’s cross in the 94th minute to spark jubilant celebrations among Julen Lopetegui’s players and supporters.
The late goal capped a remarkable turnaround in a match largely dominated by Switzerland, who appeared destined for victory after taking the lead through Breel Embolo’s first-half penalty.
The Swiss striker converted from the spot after Remo Freuler was brought down by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada inside the penalty area. However, television replays suggested the Bologna midfielder may have been marginally offside in the build-up to the incident.
For much of the contest, Murat Yakın’s side controlled proceedings and looked on course to move to the top of Group B ahead of more demanding fixtures against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Canada.
Switzerland’s inability to extend their advantage ultimately proved costly. Nottingham Forest forward Dan Ndoye squandered several promising opportunities, while Ruben Vargas and Embolo also failed to convert clear-cut chances.
The European side’s wastefulness in front of goal, coupled with a noticeable drop in intensity late in the match, opened the door for Qatar to mount a final push.
Qatar, who had been second best for long spells, made the most of their opportunity as Khoukhi’s late header rescued a memorable point and ensured a historic moment for the tournament debutants.
