Team Nigeria wrapped up an impressive campaign at the African Open Para-Powerlifting Championships in Oran, Algeria, with three additional medals on the final day of the individual events — two gold and one silver — while also setting new African and World records.
At the end of the competition, Nigeria amassed a total of 13 medals, comprising seven gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, further cementing the country’s dominance in para-powerlifting on the continent.
Nigeria’s medal haul on the final day was headlined by Mark Onyinyechi Gift in the women’s 67kg category. She delivered a historic performance by breaking the African record and setting a new World Record, reinforcing Nigeria’s growing reputation as a global force in para-powerlifting.
Another standout performer was Folashade Oluwafemiayo, who clinched gold in the women’s +86kg category with another commanding display of strength and experience.
In the women’s 50kg category, Anigbogu Chikordi Esther claimed the silver medal after lifting 114kg, narrowly finishing behind compatriot Ajiboye Rukayat, who secured gold with a lift of 115kg in a fiercely contested all-Nigerian showdown for the top spot.
The performances of the Nigerian athletes in Oran highlighted the country’s continued excellence in para-powerlifting and reflected sustained efforts to maintain dominance both in Africa and on the global stage.
