Brighton delivered a commanding 3–0 victory over Chelsea to climb above the Blues in the Premier League standings, strengthening their push for European qualification while deepening the woes of the visitors.
Goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck secured the emphatic win, lifting Brighton into sixth place. In contrast, Chelsea’s struggles continued as they slumped to a fifth consecutive league defeat without scoring for the first time since 1912.
The hosts set the tone early, overwhelming Chelsea with relentless attacking pressure from kickoff. Brighton’s intensity left the visitors pinned back and struggling to settle into the contest.
Kaoru Mitoma nearly opened the scoring within two minutes, attempting to replicate his stunning goal against Tottenham, but his first-time volley from Pascal Gross’ effort was denied by goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Brighton’s early dominance soon paid off, as they capitalised on a corner in the third minute. Kadioglu fired a low volley into the net after seizing on a poor clearance from Jorrel Hato off Gross’ delivery.
The Seagulls continued to create chances in abundance, with Jan Paul van Hecke’s header saved and Hinshelwood seeing an effort cleared off the line following a costly error from Sanchez. Georginio Rutter also threatened but fired over from inside the box.
Chelsea’s resistance finally broke again in the second half when Hinshelwood calmly finished in the 56th minute, converting a well-worked move set up by Rutter to double Brighton’s lead.
Substitutes combined late on to complete the rout, as Maxim de Cuyper set up Welbeck, who rifled home his 13th goal of the season. The result marked a memorable night for Brighton, while Chelsea’s hopes of securing Champions League football continue to fade, with the risk of slipping into the bottom half looming.
