Manchester United Secure Crucial Win Over Aston Villa With Late Cunha, Sesko Goals
Manchester United secured a crucial victory over Aston Villa as late goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko sealed an important win in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification.
The encounter, which lacked quality in the first half, came alive after the break, with United captain Bruno Fernandes playing a decisive role.
After Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez denied a goal-bound effort from Bryan Mbeumo, Fernandes delivered a perfectly weighted near-post corner that was flicked goalwards by Casemiro. The ball looped over Martínez and went in off the far post to give the hosts the lead.
Villa responded 11 minutes later when Ross Barkley, making his first Premier League start in 14 months, equalised with a sharp strike.
United, however, regained control in the closing stages. Fernandes produced an excellent through ball to release Cunha behind the Villa defence, and the Brazilian forward calmly slotted a low shot into the far corner.
Substitute Sesko then extended the advantage, taking his tally to eight goals in 10 matches. His turning shot took a deflection and looped over Martínez to seal the victory.
The result keeps United in third place and hands interim manager Michael Carrick a sixth consecutive home win — a feat previously bettered only by Sven-Göran Eriksson, Carlo Ancelotti and Manuel Pellegrini at the start of their respective Premier League tenures.
For Villa, the defeat marks a third straight league loss. They have now managed just three wins in their last 12 league games, leaving their hopes of securing Champions League football next season increasingly uncertain.
