Ex-President Jonathan Reaffirms Loyalty To PDP, Promises Active Role

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has assured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of his continued loyalty and pledged to play a more active role in the party’s affairs as it prepares for upcoming elections.

The assurance was disclosed on Tuesday by Kabiru Turaki, chairman of the PDP, following a closed-door meeting with Jonathan in Abuja. Turaki said the party leadership briefed the former president on the state of the PDP, its internal challenges, and future prospects, while also seeking his guidance and support.

According to Turaki, Jonathan reaffirmed that he remains a card-carrying member of the PDP and is committed to contributing more actively to the party’s activities.

“He assured us that he is still very much a member of the PDP, remains active, and will be even more engaged going forward,” Turaki said. “He also noted that the PDP has done a great deal for him as an individual and that he continues to feel a strong sense of obligation to the party.”

Turaki described Jonathan’s remarks as reassuring and encouraging, particularly as the party prepares for off-season governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, as well as the 2027 general election.

The meeting was attended by several PDP stakeholders, including former governors, members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), founding members, and state chairmen.

Jonathan’s renewed engagement comes amid calls from some party members urging him to contest the 2027 presidential election, following the PDP’s decision to zone its presidential ticket to the southern part of the country.

The PDP has remained divided since the 2023 general election. In November, a faction of the party supported by PDP governors, including Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, held a convention that produced a new National Working Committee (NWC), with Turaki emerging as chairman.
