Lagos Schools Embrace EQ Training as Experts Urge Students to Go Beyond Academics
The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, through Education District VI, has partnered with the Masterminds Community Foundation to host a one-day sensitisation workshop for students, as part of efforts to raise emotionally intelligent, socially responsible, and purpose-driven young people.
The initiative, titled “Smart Teens,” targets secondary school students across the district, including those from Opebi Senior Grammar School, Oregun Senior High School, Army Children Senior High School, Army Cantonment Senior High School, Community Senior High School, and State Senior High School.
Speaking at the event, the Convener of the Smart Teens Workshop and Founder of the Masterminds Community Foundation, Mrs. Vivian Oghene, emphasised the critical role of emotional and social intelligence in grooming future leaders.
She noted that academic intelligence alone is not sufficient for success, stressing the need for young people to develop strong emotional awareness. “We learnt how to solve equations, but not always how to solve conflicts; how to analyse data, but not always how to analyse our behaviour,” she said.
Also speaking, the retired Director of Schools Administration, Education District VI, Mr. Olumuyiwa Amodu, commended the initiative and urged that it be extended to other districts across the state.
The workshop brought together students, teachers, and counsellors from schools within the Ikeja zone of the district, creating a platform for collective engagement and learning.
Participants described the experience as transformative and called for its continuity to help strengthen emotional development and produce well-rounded, balanced students across Lagos schools.
