The Nigerian Human Rights Community was thrown into a mourning mood yesterday night (Sunday night) when the renowned activist and Secretary of the Joint Action Front, Joint Action Front (JAF) — the umbrella body for pro-labour civil society organizations, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, declared dead.
The details of his death remain sketchy but reports indicate that Aremu was knocked down by a vehicle while crossing the road to his residence in Ota, Ogun State, around 6 p.m. on Sunday.
He was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors made efforts to resuscitate him with oxygen, but he was later confirmed dead.
Meanwhile, condolence messages had begun to pour in from right activists across the country.
Former Chairman, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) in Ogun State, Com. Muyiwa Bankole, wrote on his facebook page, ” What a great loss! Stroke didn’t kill Aremson. But “hit and run” driver sniffled Life out of our leader. This looks like an organized crime. But the solace is……. Every soul shall taste death.
Rest in power,Aremson”.
A lawyer and veteran journalist, Richard Akinola, in a message on his facebook page, said ” What a shocking departure. Fare thee well, Abiodun “Aremson” Aremu, a Comrade in the real sense of the word”.
Olalekan Soyombo, a former Student activist and lawyer, on his facebook page wrote”Abiodun Aremu , A Great Man; a core leftist, a core progressive, a radical revolutionary, a fighter and a patriot of no means. You indeed fought the battle and of course won in honor. You did not negotiate the value of change nor compromise, but resolute till the end. The African Human Rights community will Miss you Greatly. Rest on peacefully AREMSON till we meet to part no more”.
Also, the Convener of Revolution Now Movement and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, in a message on his social media handle, said ” Sad to hear that our revolutionary senior comrade and mentor, Abiodun Aremuu, has passed away.
” We will deeply miss his courage, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to justice and liberation of the African continent. May his soul rest in power, and may his legacy continue to inspire the struggle for a freer, fairer, and just world.
Right activist, Com.Declan Ihekare, described Aremu as a mentor, power enabler in struggle, saying the news of his death was devastating. He disclosed that Aremu spoke with him 24hrs to his 57th birthday, telling him that the struggle to rescue the oppressed shouldn’t die.
However, the Nigeria Labour Movement had announced that his interment would take place on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Announcing the burial date, a Labour activist, Owei Lakemfa, said the Aremu family had agreed with the Labour Movement that the interment of the late Comrade leader be moved by about two weeks, adding “This is to allow for proper mobilization and attendance”.
“Consequently, Comrade Aremu will now be interred on Thursday, 23rd October, 2025 at Number 30, Kabiru Fatoye Street, Opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
“Our hearts are with the dear family of our departed Comrade”, said Lakemfa.
