The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, on Friday dismissed claims that his donations to education and health institutions across the country are politically motivated.
Obi made the clarification during a visit to The Good Hope Specialist Hospital in Isulo, along Basden Road in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where he donated ₦10 million to support the hospital.
He said his interventions were purely humanitarian and aimed at improving the quality of education and healthcare services in the state and across Nigeria.
“Health is critical and whenever the issue of health is mentioned, we all need to come together and support it. We’ll be giving an initial ₦10 million and will follow it up soon. We’ll continue to do the right thing because I believe that for us to succeed, we must invest in critical areas of development, of which the foundation is health,” Obi said.
“It’s when people are healthy that they can be productive. We need to keep replicating these things. This gesture is purely out of my volition. I’ve always supported good causes willingly. It has nothing to do with politics. Of course, you know I’m not contesting any election in Anambra State,” he added.
The former governor noted that his support for faith-based organizations has consistently yielded positive results, expressing confidence that The Good Hope Specialist Hospital would soon be transformed.
On the issue of insecurity across the country, Obi said Nigerians must not resign themselves to fear or abandon their communities.
“That’s why we’re insisting on doing the right thing by investing in critical areas of health, education and pulling people out of poverty. The more you pull people out of poverty, the more you reduce criminality,” he said.
