Lawyers Seek Domestication Of Disability Law In States

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA’s Lawyers with Disabilities have called on state governments to domesticate the Disability Law, already assented to by the Federal Government.

The lawyers argued that it will protect the rights of people with disabilities, as well as their families.

At a zonal summit held in Maiduguri, Borno State,  the forum of Lawyers with Disabilities, converged to advocate for inclusivity in all public programmes and policies and their implementation.

The disability law, as assented to by the Federal Government, addresses the challenges of all people with disabilities.

However, since 2019 when the law was assented to by the Buhari administration, most states of the federation were yet to domesticate it.

While a state assembly like that of Borno passed the law during the ninth assembly, it has not been assented to.

The Nigerian Bar Association now leads the campaign for the law to be replicated in the states.

Borno State Commissioner for Justice, represented by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice, Garba Chibok said plans were underway to send an Executive Bill to the State Assembly.
