The Federal Road Safety Corps has called for a multisectoral approach to address the persistent issue of fuel tanker crashes and the alarming fatalities caused by fuel scooping.
Speaking during a press conference in Abuja, FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, outlined the complex nature of the problem, stressing the need for collaboration among key stakeholders, including transport unions, fire services, and the National Emergency Management Agency.
According to him, the causes of fuel tanker crashes are multifaceted, involving human error, vehicle integrity, mechanical failures, and the lack of precautionary safety measures.
He explained that the transportation of petroleum products across vast distances increases the likelihood of crashes.
It would be recalled that on January 25, 2024, 18 people were killed in a tanker explosion in Enugu State.
Also, on January 18, 2024, 98 people were killed in a tanker explosion in Nigeria State.
