The Lagos State Ministry of Health recently celebrated World Pharmacists Day 2026 with an engaging awareness walk and a free deworming initiative, shining a light on the essential role pharmacists play in ensuring medicine safety, preventing diseases, and enhancing community health.
The event took place at the Lagos State Secretariat in Alausa-Ikeja, bringing together pharmacists and various health-sector stakeholders under the theme, “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures.”
During the event, Pharm. Olabisi Okewole, the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, emphasized the need for greater investment in the pharmacy workforce, ongoing professional development, and the integration of technology.
Okewole highlighted that pharmacists do much more than just dispense medications, saying they are crucial in areas like pharmacovigilance, antimicrobial stewardship, patient safety, and disease prevention.
She encouraged residents to report any suspected adverse drug reactions to help promote safer medication practices and urged pharmacists to embrace new innovations and opportunities in digital and public health.
Dr. Oladipupo Fisher, the Director of Disease Control, also spoke, recognizing pharmacists as a vital part of the healthcare team, especially through community pharmacies that provide essential services to underserved populations.
This celebration truly highlighted the indispensable role pharmacists play in preventive healthcare, ensuring medicine safety, and improving health outcomes throughout Lagos State.
