The Lagos State Government has intensified monitoring of major healthcare projects as the 280-bed Ojo General Hospital nears completion and work continues on the 180-bed Somolu General Hospital.
During the inspection of the project, the Commissioner of Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi said the Ojo facility is about 85 per cent complete and may be ready for commissioning by late 2026 or early 2027. He said finishing works are ongoing, with equipment and furniture already ordered.
At Somolu, Abayomi inspected the new seven-floor hospital, now about 15 per cent complete. He said the decision to build a new facility was due to population pressure and limitations of the existing 60-bed hospital, which will continue to operate during construction.
He said “The new Somolu hospital will serve as a Head and Neck Super-Specialty Centre, offering ENT, dental, eye care, plastic and maxillofacial surgery, alongside general medical services. The old facility will later be demolished and redeveloped after the new one opens”.
Abayomi said the state is upgrading general hospitals into specialist centres to reduce medical tourism and improve access to advanced care locally. He added that the designs include renewable energy, infection control systems, and other modern infrastructure for efficiency and safety.
He noted that about 107,000 patients currently use the Somolu hospital, serving a catchment population of up to 10 million people.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Works, Dr. Adekunle Olayinka, confirmed the Ojo project is 85 per cent complete, with minor corrections being addressed. He said its solar system meets required standards.
Olayinka added that Somolu, now back on track after initial delays, is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2027 with green and energy-efficient features.
