Lagos Expands Access To Advanced Cardiac Care

…. Protects Residents From Medical Costs

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to advanced cardiac care and protecting residents from catastrophic health costs, as beneficiaries of its Free Health Initiative shared how government intervention saved their lives.

The beneficiaries, including 19-year-old Lydia Ogungbayi, 16-year-old Moshood Muritala and three-year-old Ayoife George, were received by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi; Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi; and Permanent Secretary, Dr. Dayo Lajide.

Abayomi said the cases highlight the need for funding, expertise, equipment and insurance to deliver life-saving care locally and reduce medical travel abroad. He praised cardiothoracic surgeon Prof. Bode Falase and his team for building local surgical capacity.

He also said the government is investing in specialist facilities, including the proposed Massey Children’s Hospital, and stressed mandatory health insurance to prevent catastrophic expenses.

Ogunyemi said the initiative reflects the Sanwo-Olu administration’s focus on quality healthcare, noting the need for careful prioritisation. She commended the LASUTH cardiothoracic team for their work.

Lajide said the recoveries reflect the extensive administrative and funding processes behind government-supported care.

Erinosho, Director of Medical Administration, said Lydia’s case required ₦5 million in support and a 10-hour successful surgery at LASUTH. She added that Moshood received treatment in India with additional funding, while Ayoife also underwent surgery abroad.

Falase said Lydia’s treatment began in 2024 and was completed successfully in 2025.

Lydia, who had been ill for nearly six years, said she was “finally free” and grateful for her care.

Other beneficiaries included Moshood Muritala and Ayoife George, both of whom received life-saving cardiac surgery abroad.
